Elisha speaks with Elijah on the bank of the Jordan

The Mantle

Are all spiritual mantles the same?

Vince Baker and Sergie Atams use the word mantle for the empowerment that accompanies a particular assignment. Scripture describes a variety of gifts and kinds of service under the same Lord.

Compare the lists of gifts

Romans 12 includes service, teaching, generosity, leadership, and mercy. First Corinthians 12 emphasizes both variety and the Spirit’s distribution of gifts. Ephesians 4 describes ministries that equip the body. Each passage gives the reader a different angle on how God builds up a community through different people.

Why difference is good for the church

Paul compares believers to parts of a body. The image changes the question from which calling looks most impressive to what the whole community needs. Elijah’s bold public confrontation and Elisha’s quiet attention to a widow both belong to the story of God’s care for Israel. Use that comparison to notice gifts your community may be overlooking.
