Elijah and Elisha walk through the hills overlooking the Jordan

The Story

What is the story of Elijah and Elisha?

Elijah called Elisha away from his plow in 1 Kings 19. Elisha served him, stayed with him on his final journey, witnessed his departure, and returned across the Jordan carrying Elijah’s mantle in 2 Kings 2.

A Bible study from Vince Baker Ministries, informed by Mantle of Elijah by Vince Baker and Sergie Atams.

Read the Scriptures

From a field to a river

Mark the two places where the mantle changes hands or comes into view. In the field Elisha is working. At the river he has already spent time serving Elijah. A servant later identifies him to King Jehoshaphat as the man who poured water on Elijah’s hands. That small detail gives weight to the years between the dramatic scenes.

What each prophet was sent to do

Elijah’s ministry included confronting Ahab and calling Israel back to the Lord. Elisha carried forward the prophetic work while serving people in a wide range of situations, from a city with bad water to a widow in debt. Reading both stories together shows continuity of God’s work and room for distinct assignments.
