Elijah casts his cloak over Elisha at the plow

The Story

Why did Elijah throw his mantle over Elisha?

Elijah cast his mantle over Elisha as a sign of his call to succeed him. God had already named Elisha as the prophet who would follow Elijah in 1 Kings 19:16.

Look closely at Elisha’s response

The call interrupts an ordinary workday. Elisha asks to say farewell to his parents and then uses the plowing equipment to prepare a meal from the oxen. The meal is shared with the people. Afterward, he goes with Elijah and serves him. His first public action in the story is a farewell and an act of hospitality.

Calling and the next step

The book’s chapter on cost asks what obedience requires before ministry is visible. Luke 9 also uses the image of the plow when Jesus speaks about the urgency of following him. Read each scene in its own context, then ask what present responsibility obedience would require of you. It might begin with an honest conversation, a commitment to serve, or a decision to finish work already entrusted to you.
