Elijah ascends above the fiery chariot as Elisha looks on

The Double Portion

How can I lead an Elijah and Elisha Bible study?

Plan four readings: Elisha’s call in 1 Kings 19, the succession in 2 Kings 2, service in 2 Kings 4–6, and the Gospel connections in Luke 1, Matthew 3, and Luke 4.

A Bible study from Vince Baker Ministries, informed by Mantle of Elijah by Vince Baker and Sergie Atams.

Read the Scriptures

Session one and two

Read the call aloud and ask what Elisha leaves and what he does next. For the transition, assign readers the voices of Elijah, Elisha, and the sons of the prophets. Have the group identify the order of the two Jordan crossings, the request, and the recognition. Invite someone to read Deuteronomy 21:17 and ask how the inheritance background illuminates the request.

Session three and four

Compare the widow’s oil and the chariots at Dothan. Ask what the people needed and how the prophet responded. Then read the Gospel passages and identify what is said about John’s role and Jesus’ anointing. End by asking each person to name an act of service and one person who can encourage them to follow through.
