Elisha speaks with Elijah on the bank of the Jordan

The Double Portion

Did Elisha perform twice as many miracles as Elijah?

Some readers count roughly twice as many recorded miracles for Elisha as for Elijah, but the total varies depending on what qualifies as a separate event. The narrative explains Elisha’s succession directly through the Jordan crossing and the witnesses.

Why counts differ

A list may count prophecies, answered prayers, reversals of a sign, or only extraordinary acts. The story of the man revived after touching Elisha’s bones is sometimes included in the total, although it occurs after Elisha’s death. Other lists count a sequence such as the blindness and restored sight at Dothan as one event. State your counting rules before comparing totals.

Where Kings places the emphasis

The prophets recognize Elisha immediately after the Jordan crossing, long before readers could tally the later episodes. For an overview of his ministry, sort the stories by whom they help: a household, a community, a foreign commander, or a nation in conflict. That exercise shows the range of the work described as well as its continuity with Elijah.
