Elisha picks up the cloak that fell from Elijah

Calling & Ministry

How does someone receive a mantle from God?

Elisha’s story shows God initiating the call, Elisha answering it, and his assignment becoming evident through service and obedience. The New Testament teaches that the Holy Spirit distributes gifts and calls believers to steward them.

Read the Scriptures

Begin with the work already in front of you

Elisha begins as someone who follows and serves. Acts 13 describes another setting: worshiping and fasting leaders hear the Holy Spirit direct them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a particular work. In both accounts an assignment takes shape in the company of other people and results in concrete action.

Discernment takes time

Ask where your service meets a real need, what fruit others recognize, and where a trusted leader sees room for growth. Pray for the wisdom to accept correction and for strength to continue when service is hidden. The book’s theme of responsibility becomes practical when you can name the people who will benefit and describe what you can do for them.
