Elisha picks up the cloak that fell from Elijah

Calling & Ministry

What are biblical examples of passing the mantle?

Elijah and Elisha provide the explicit cloak story. Other examples of leadership succession include Moses commissioning Joshua and Paul entrusting teaching to Timothy, who was to pass it on to faithful people.

Compare the forms of succession

Moses asks God to appoint someone to lead the people. Joshua is commissioned publicly. Elisha picks up a cloak after his mentor is taken and the prophets recognize him at Jericho. Paul’s instructions to Timothy describe teaching going forward across generations. The three scenes differ in setting, but each makes the new responsibility visible.

What can be handed on today?

A ministry can teach Scripture carefully, share responsibilities with new leaders, and explain what good stewardship looks like. Write down one responsibility your team would struggle to carry if you were suddenly unavailable. Invite someone to learn it with you and give them time to practice while support is available.

Questions readers ask

Does every succession involve a physical mantle?

Scripture gives multiple patterns. The cloak belongs to Elijah’s story, while Joshua’s commissioning and Timothy’s teaching assignment have their own forms.
