A Bible study from Vince Baker Ministries, informed by Mantle of Elijah by Vince Baker and Sergie Atams.
Read the Scriptures
Track the verbs in the passage
The chariot and horses appear and divide the two men. Elijah goes up, Elisha sees him, and Elisha cries out. That close reading makes it easier to distinguish the details of the account from a common artistic image of Elijah riding the chariot. The fiery imagery still has a major role in the story, visibly separating mentor and successor.
Why the image returns
When Elisha’s servant is afraid at Dothan, the Lord opens his eyes and he sees horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha. Years later, the king of Israel uses language about Israel’s chariots and horsemen as he weeps over Elisha. Read these scenes together and ask what each person sees or recognizes about the protection and help Israel needs.
