Elijah strikes the Jordan with his mantle before the two prophets cross

The Story

How did Elijah and Elisha cross the Jordan River?

In 2 Kings 2:8 Elijah struck the Jordan with his rolled-up mantle, and the two prophets crossed on dry ground. After Elijah was taken, Elisha used the same mantle, called on the Lord, and crossed back.

Read the outward and return journeys together

Fifty of the sons of the prophets stand at a distance as Elijah and Elisha reach the river. The first crossing takes place before the request for a double portion. The second occurs after Elisha has seen Elijah depart. Placing the scenes side by side helps explain why the witnesses recognize the successor.

The Bible’s earlier water crossings

In Exodus, Israel crosses the sea after Moses stretches out his hand. In Joshua, the priests carrying the ark step into the Jordan before Israel crosses. The details and purposes differ across the three accounts. Each event marks a change for the people who pass through. Ask what the author of Kings accomplishes by giving this chapter two crossings, one with both prophets and one with Elisha alone.
