Elisha watches Elijah ascend as a chariot of fire passes between them

The Story

What happened when Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel?

In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal, repairs the Lord’s altar, and prays. Fire consumes the sacrifice, and the people acknowledge that the Lord is God.

Read the Scriptures

Notice the repair before the fire

Elijah rebuilds the altar with twelve stones associated with the tribes of Israel. The action recalls the identity of the people gathered there. Read his prayer aloud and underline the reasons he gives for asking God to answer. He wants people to know the Lord and to see that their hearts are being turned back.

Why James remembers Elijah

James points to Elijah as a human being like us and uses the drought and the return of rain to encourage earnest prayer. That later reference helps readers study Elijah without making his life remote from theirs. Use it to guide a prayer for restoration, and consider whether reconciliation or repair calls for action alongside your prayer.
