Elijah covers his face at the cave entrance at Horeb

The Story

What was the still small voice Elijah heard?

In 1 Kings 19:11–13, Elijah encounters wind, earthquake, and fire, followed by what the King James Version calls a “still small voice.” Elijah covers his face with his mantle and goes to the cave entrance.

Read the Scriptures

Read what happens before the cave

Elijah flees after Jezebel threatens him. He is exhausted, receives food and rest, and travels to Horeb. The conversation at the cave includes his complaint about being left alone. God gives him specific work and tells him about the people who have not bowed to Baal. Read the quiet encounter alongside the practical care and the new assignment.

When God’s ways surprise us

The previous chapter features fire at Carmel. At Horeb, the narrator says the Lord is not in the wind, earthquake, or fire. These scenes encourage attention to what God says in each context. In a small group, take time to read the whole chapter aloud and make a list of what Elijah receives beyond the sound he hears.
