Elisha stands beside the Jordan as the waters part

The Story

Who were the sons of the prophets?

The sons of the prophets were groups associated with prophetic ministry. Second Kings 2 mentions them at Bethel and Jericho. Those at Jericho recognize Elisha’s succession after his return across the Jordan.

What the prophets see and say

Some of the group know that Elijah will be taken. Fifty stand at a distance while Elijah and Elisha reach the Jordan. After Elisha returns, the prophets at Jericho declare that Elijah’s spirit rests on him. They then ask to search for Elijah and learn from the outcome that the departure cannot be undone.

Prophetic formation happened in community

Later scenes show a group sitting before Elisha and undertaking a building project. Their practical needs include food and space. These glimpses help readers picture communities learning together, with room for correction and shared work. They also invite a study group to consider what it can observe and confirm about emerging gifts.
